I have an issue with an RT5 upright and I need to disassemble it. I am not certain of how to take it apart. I would think you could press the bearing out of the spindle, but I am afraid to apply too much pressure.

    Here are the questions.

How do you remove the hub from the spindle?
How do you remove the spindle from the upright?

    Please help!

    Courtney,

First take off the nuts that hold the stub axle on. Later cars were fitted with two "bearing nuts" that have tabs and look a lot like a coil spring perch and take either a brass drift or a special wrench to get loose. Later aftermarket stub axles will have a hex on the inside of the upright so you can use a large socket to hold the axle. Original axles will be round and it can be a bitch.

Then the stub axles should push out of the bearing. Remember to support the bearing from underneath with a steel tube. You do not want to push on ally. After that, making sure all large circlips are removed, the bearing should push out of the upright, again supporting the upright gingerly. You should heat the upright up quite well, assuming the bearing is to be replaced. Probably the best alternative is to send the thingie to either Pat Prince or Marc Bahner and have them replace the bearings. Quite reasonable, and safer.

    Good luck.
