Forgot the Mk4 had the dogged hubs etc. Sadly there are no hubs here to do more research, just gear sets. The idea however could be the reason for the odd first gear driver...

I doubt it..the fundamental design of this stuff screams VW/Mk tranny. Same dogs, same needle bearings, didn't check the layshaft but it looks right.
