The cold start valves have been disabled sometime last century.
A bit of JB Weld on the hole, and no one will know.

Got it. Had to drill through the side of the carb, and use a punch from underneath. Picture to follow.
The cold start valves had all been blanked off.
Thanks for those hints. Any idea of what that hole does, and how to get to it from the other side?
https://www.apexspeed.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=108933&stc=1When cleaning and rebuilding one of my carbs for my Lotus, one of the accellerator check balls fell into the wrong hole. I...
I sell a lot of shocks for old race cars. This method works pretty well. Never use the length of the existing shock as being correct, even if it is the original. Most shocks are made in 1”...
Steve, all looks good. The only thing I was looking at was to use a long 3/8 bolt, and big washers from the wheel side, to cover the inner race of the inner bearing, so if the circlip failed again,...
My 50 year old Hawke DL11, has lost one of its circlips that prevent the front stub axle from coming out of the upright. Of course, it cant, as the brake disk is surrounded by the caliper. However,...
It’s not often that you see a 1917 Ford on the track, especially a wet one.
Winton Festival of Speed, Benalla Victoria, Ausralia.
Put the car at the correct ride height. Measure the lengths. Call it B. Raise the chassis 2”. Measure again. Call it A. Put chassis on ground. Call it C.
A-C = stroke. C to B should be...
Gee, thanks for that. It’s amazing what is really under your nose. Just under that bench in the picture, is my TIG, and it’s Argon bottle.
When going over some of my spares, I found an old unused master cylinder with a bit of rust on the inside of the reservoir. I've got rid of that by a dunk in an ultrasonic cleaner.
My question...
Last time I had to fix a Hewland case, I found that I needed to buy 5 kg of rods.
It was easier to find a Formula Vee guy, who claimed that the VW crankcase could be welded with the same rods....
I supply and fit shocks to many older formula cars, and can only reinforce what Steve Lathrop has said. It’s a great starting point, and it really is that simple. I struggle to understand why so...
Another vote for this. I did it several years ago, and and there does not look like any hint of failure. Whereas, the old donuts had to be replaced every season.
Dave, thanks for that, probably a lot easier to toss them than get a new one. From what I can determine, all of this rear end drive was manufactured by Hawke.
After almost 50 years of faithful service, the rear drive hubs of my Hawke DL11 are looking a little worn. In this case, it looks like the retaining nut was not as tight as it could have been, and...
And if my memory is correct - sometimes it has let me down - those forces are at the metric equivilant of 20 inches per second. Which is not a shock speed you will normally encounter in these type...
Just keep in mind that is 500 and 180 lbs at 20 ips. Are you going to be seeing those shaft speeds a lot?
Sure looks like my Hawke DL11, even down to the Roland valve cover.
The front lower rack mounts, show a longer stud that is used on mine to attach the front radiator.
The DL9 used side...
The End of Day list is noted.
And don’t forget some pre race checking on the trailer. You cant race if you cant get there.
Wheel bearings, tyres, electrics, etc.
Norm, how long have you had that Hawke?
The number 180 60 is a Bilstien number that designates its resistance at a particular shaft speed. You can get the exact details from the Bilstien web site.
Looks like one less Lotus Europa.
Scott, if that is one of the old canister master cylinders, I just found the numbers on the seals, googled them, and found them on line. I cant recall who the supplier was, but I got them without...
I can help you with the shocks. To lower, just wind the bottom perch down. If its still too high, your springs are too long, and or the shocks are too long.
John,
I reset the camber every time.
Thanks for that. I'll get some new springs to come up to those numbers.
Steve, I put about 1" rake. I measured up the front roll centre over Xmas, by drawing it up half sized. However, my son thought that would be a good bit of paper to use to wrap his presents in, so...
Steve,
I've softened the front bar, got the rear bar on full hard. Changed the bump and rebound valving to softer front, and harder rear.
Made the front upright mounts higher to improve the...
In looking over my car during the summer break, I found that my front 450# springs are really 500#, which could explain my continual low speed understeer.
This meant I had a front wheel rate of...
I'm in the process of summer overhaul, and its rack rebuild time. What are people using for lubrication? I've heard of engine or gearbox oil, STP and grease.
John,
Thanks. All good.
I ran into Mike - a fellow Hawke DL11 owner - at Road America the other week, and I promised to send him some information, but I seem to have misplaced his email.
If Mike is reading this,...
There was a batch here in Australia a few years ago that were cracking, and centres pulling out. Some people contacted Weller and got replacements.
Perhaps contact Weller?
To keep the car in period, you will probably need some twin tube single adjustable steel body shock. I'm the Australian agent for AVO, but that's probably not going to help you much, as there is not...
It's going to be probable that the shocks are also shot. Get them dynoed first and report back.
I've seen many people try to race old cars on crap shocks, and get totally peeed off, with...
I've been doing FF standing starts for the last 20 years. I can't recall anyone ever stalling.
I am thinking of buying one of their shock dynos. From what I can determine, they are a couple of old Roehrig employees, and have set up their own business.

Has...
I'm the Australian Agent for AVO shock absorbers and I've supplied shocks to replace Bilsteins. The AVO is a twin tube with a single adjuster, very similar in appearance to the Spax above.
Once...
I sell and service another brand of shocks here in Australia. I have never seen a "serviced" set of these ever testing OK on my dyno. I have never found anyone who can supply parts who can fix...
Greg,
Thanks for that, but that is the problem. We have two distributors here, and we are getting different statements, and the Head Office in the UK is unclear.
These have been out of production for the last couple of years. However rumours persist that production is due to restart, or not.
Has anyone in the Northern Hemisphere heard any thing?
Or go to your local Catapillar dealer. 62 cents each, and work just as well. If you're interested I've got the part numbers in my workshop.
I read today in the "Oily Rag" (the Australian magazine covering Historic Racing) of this program. It focused on a swap of a Canadian and Australian racing the others cars in the others countries. ...
Richard, many thanks. I've realised that I should have taken more notice in my Strength of Materials lectures, and they were over 40 years ago.
Richard, thanks for that. I was just going to machine it myself, but the heat treatment bit is beyond my capability. Would you say it is really needed? Bear in mind, that when Mr Lazenby made...
Steve, it is one piece.
