The "Animal "Rules West Palm Beach and "Ironman"takes Points Lead
From: Pawleys Island, South Carloina- May 20th,2019 - Rounds three and four of the Southernformulacar.com f2000 championship presented by American Racer Tires had another successful weekend at Palm Beach International Raceway in West Palm Beach,Florida. The series is experiencing rapid growth as 24 different drivers have participated in the first two events of the 2019 season. The series is building relationships with many sponsors and also working with several regions of the Southeast divisions of SCCA to put on each event. Although there are some bugs to be worked out the on SCCA operations side of things, the excitement level and personalities of the drivers and teams are producing some awesome racing. The LTD Motorsports entry of Mauro Fauza burst on to the scene this weekend for his first race of the season . Mauro "The Animal "Fauza may be mild mannered when he is hanging out talking around the paddock , but when he gets in the car its all business as he performed magnificently this weekend. He grabbed the pole position for both races this weekend and overcame some incredible obstacles due to miss communications with the pace car to win the first race of the weekend and then another flawless drive capturing race two on Sunday. It certainly wasnt easy for the mild mannered Fauza as he came around to the start finish to find the 2nd pace car had gone way too slow and he was having to weave through cars of the split start group that were not even up to speed. All of the drivers did a skillful job to avoid the slower cars and it actually made for some quite interesting racing even though it was bordering crazy. Doug Stewart in his brand new Van Diemen MZR powered Low Country Credit card Processing entry was all over Mauro as Doug was only driving in his 2nd ever race in this car . Doug has picked up this form of racing very quickly and he is certainly going to be a front runner all year as he gains experience . Jim Johnson, a very fast local driver was not so lucky in all the confusion and he bent his front wing and retired from the race. Fullcourse caution was brought out around the same time as Johnson's exit from the track and on the restart Doug Stewart took the lead for nearly the whole lap but Mauro made the pass on the last turn and regained the lead for remainder of the race. Doug kept the same gap throughout the race but just couldn't close in to make the pass. Doug Stewart grabbed another 2nd place on Sundays race even though he was having mechanical issues a few laps from the end.
Another big story of the weekend was that of Chris Scharnow from St.Petersburg, Florida. He made his return to the series with some very special assistance from a famous family member in USf2000 history in that of Reggie Cape . He is son Of Dominic Cape and nephew of Nicholas Cape the famous duo of Cape Motorsports who have dominated F2000 racing since 2001 in the United States. Reggie guided Scharnow to a fine pair of 3rd place finishes and it would appear this youngster will follow in the footsteps of his very famous Father and uncle. He was very impressive giving Chris a very finely tuned car to capture two podium finishes which was no easy task in a series that is growing in stature each event. We hear that he will be back with the Scharnow team at the next event st Sebring international where the Capes have thousands of miles around that 1.9 mile Sebring short circuit. Its so exciting to see a 2nd generation of Cape Motorsports associated with our championship and it really helps Chris Scharnow to preform at his best knowing he has a very good car to make it all happen.
Bob Coury also had a couple of fine results as he also entered the series in his new Van Diemen that he purchased off front runner Davy Daddario of the f2000 championship series. Davy and his father John also assisted in tuning the car all weekend which really increased Coury's chances of success. Coury nearly made it by Chris Scharnow for 3rd spot in both races but just couldnt pull it off so he settled for a couple of fine top five finishes. Ship Weld in the Weld Motorsports Van diemen decided to drive the car himself after his driver had a late cancellation and Skip showed us that he is a very capable driver also grabbing consecutive top five finishes. The final big story of the weekend was that of "Ironman" Jim Belay who finished 6th in both races which was enough to give him overall points lead going into the Sebring event June 7th and 8th. Jim couldn't quite grasp the handling of the car all weekend but he managed a pair of 6th place finishes which edged him into the points lead 3 points ahead of Doug Stewart. Belay is also driving the older 2.0 liter engine which to some may seem a disadvantage but with series rules we try and give all cars a fighting chance to win no matter what year of chassis or engine configuration. We try and base the series on driving skill and not the amount of money spent to win. Jim Belay, the "Ironman" of f2000 with more starts in the class then anyone in the country is a true enthusiast and we are proud that he is starting out the year so well and we certainly wish the best of luck to him the rest of the 2019 season. Another driver who decided to join in on the fun for the weekend was Peter Horvath who had not driven his F2000 car in 11 seasons but was so impressed with the new series he decided to roll his car out and join in on the fun. He also had a respectable finish but was forced to not start the second race due to mechanical difficulties.
The series had another very exciting weekend of racing and the points championship is up for grabs among many drivers as we head to Sebring next month and we are expecting 17 to 18 cars for this event which would be the largest field to date. We hope to announce within the week another race title sponsor which will offer extra prizes . Please be sure and do everything you can to attend Sebring because it so important to maintain these large fields throughout the five event championship to attract even more drivers and sponsors. .
