Pinto timing mark(s)
Hi All,
I had my motor rebuilt and found timing marks on the flywheel at what appear to be 38 and 40 degrees. I was told by the builder and my father that 36 degrees is probably the max advance a motor of this displacement might run. Before I mark the flywheel at 36 I thought I’d ask the experts here that have lots of Pinto experience.
Thanks for any advice,
Mike

Get one of those paint pens in a bright color and 'fill in' the 38 deg mark.
Use an adjustable timing light.
Recheck your measurements. If 36 deg is the max then why would someone ever mark 38 and 40?
Unless your timing window is different.
What is the cam timing?
Farley says cam timing 2 – 4 degrees retard.
Quicksilver says 3 degrees retard.

Thx Beer Budget,
Those marks were precisely why I asked. My cam is at -2.

I don't have the engine out to measure angles, but my flywheel (Ivey) had two marks as well. I always painted the early one yellow, the later one red, zero is white and 180 is blue.
Timed the engine at yellow, have for 20 years, no apparent issues.
I'd give Butler or QS a call to verify

38 and 40 are the two common marks (yellow and red) on a ff1600 flywheel.
