Firing a motor that has been sitting for years

Okay guys, as some of you saw in another thread I am a younger guy looking to get into FV. I found a nice older Vee that I will be picking up in 2 weeks. It's got a Rollins Butler/Cricket Farms motor in it. The guy who has it now bought the FV as a backup when he was running nationals, he never raced it but did test drive it around an empty lot when he first got it. He parked it inside his shop and it has been sitting for around 7 years. He turned it over a time or two but it has not been fired since then.

What all should I do/inspect before trying to fire it up?

Here is my list so far:

Drain/clean/inspect fuel tank and lines (maybe replace the lines)
Clean carb out
New plugs and plug wires
New oil/filter
New transaxle fluid
Manually turn it over a few times to get oil in the cylinder


Any help would be greatly appreciated.


Also, any suggestions on the best oil, plugs, and wires to run?

Before you put new plugs in, spray some oil into the cyls then crank it over with no plugs in it. Starter will spin it pretty fast with no compression.

run a line from the carb to a gas can. If the goal is to see if it runs, you can do the tank later...

Also, as you crank it without the plugs in you can establish oil pressure before it runs!

Replace the fuel lines, mine were old and sprung a pinhole leak that shot right on to the header pipe, lucky I caught it when I did.

Mobile !, !0 W 30 synthetic.....superior flow and lubrication !

You shouldn't need wires unless it didn't have any.

Probably won't need plugs either.

btw this is just a bug engine so don't get too carried away

i would just try and start it, if it doesn't have oil pressure shut it down

look for leaks

have your fire extinguisher ready

I would take out the plugs, probably the intake and exhaust and spray in/squirt in Metal Rescue let sit a a couple of days while you do other tasks to the car (like brakes, etc.) - re apply often and the slowly hand crank the engine and repeat the process ......................

Then follow the other pre-fire suggestions set forth in this thread and let 'er rip with Rec 90 or AvGas

All sounds good with the exception of the oil mentioned. If you choose to run street oil, you must boost the ZDDP, or you WILL lose a camshaft. Ever since the EPA dictated dropping the ZN and PH to sub 800ppm, flat tappet engines simply can't live with the stuff. The other option is to go with any good race oil.
